Be My Valentine: Music Mix #5 – Unrequited Love

February 13th, 2006 by nana at 4:45 pm

Before we get into my mix today, I’d like to clarify something. I am not a Myspace whore. I just like the convenience of being able to go to a page where you can sample some of the artist’s songs, and have a link to other information about them (such as their website). We’re about efficiency here at Pleasant Interruption industries. If someone makes a Myspace killer, then I’ll link to that. (wink)

———————————

Time for some songs about unrequited love. We’ve all been there (I think!): our feelings aren’t returned by the one we have feelings for. Here’s yer poison:

Eros’ Entropic Tundra – of Montreal

The song opens with “All I ever get is sad love.” Nuff’ said.

Digital Love – Daft Punk

To paraphrase: “I had a dream about you. In my dream we danced and partied all night. Then I woke up. I wish my dream was real!”

This is an amazing dance song. My friend Uzo and I always do the robot to this one.

Razorblade – The Strokes

The poppiest song from the new Strokes album! It’s about a relationship where one partner is more devoted than the other, who just wants to use the other. The line “Oh no, my feelings are more important than yours” is sang over what sounds unmistakably like the chorus of Barry Manilow’s song “Mandy”.

We’re Just Friends – Wilco

I haven’t heard much Wilco, but this band are on my “to listen list.” Especially after I heard this song.

(This Is) The Dream of Evan and Chan – DNTEL

After this collaboration between Ben Gibbard from Death Cab for Cutie and Jimmy Tamborello from DNTEL, and much pestering from hungry fans, the Postal Service was born.

While not actually a song about unrequited love (it’s actually a retelling of a dream Ben Gibbard had), it’s just anotehr one of those tunes about a perfect dream situation being ruined. And isn’t that what unrequited love is all about?

Well, that’s all for today! I hope you’re enjoying the stuff Rua and I are putting up. I have some special songs I’ve been saving for tomorrow, so remember to check back in between smooches (if you’re paired up) or sobs (if you aren’t!).
