I just had my first reading week

…and it was the biggest waste of my time ever.

During the whole week I was at home in Belleville I had one productive day…and it was because I bought new shoelaces and got a haircut.

Although this is my 3rd year of university I’ve never had a full reading week beacuse I used to be in engineering so in 1st year I only had 2 days off – Thursday and Friday of reading week – while non-mathies and non-engineers had a whole week off and in 2nd year I was on co-op working in Ottawa so I didn’t get a reading week at all. I never really cared though and now that I’ve had one, can’t say that I’m any happier.

I’m beginning to wonder why I even bothered going home but on the other hand it was nice to have a week of doing absolutely nothing except playing video games, watching tv, spending an absurd amount of my day sleeping (I woke up at 5:30pm on Friday) and eating like a gluttonous pig. I only do it a few times a year, namely during the weeks after exams and during Christmas, but I feel it’s important beacuse it gets it out of my system and it reminds me what a waste of time it is so that for the rest of the year I don’t even care to play games or watch tv. It’s weird…but it’s my thing.

I mainly came home because my friends Ryan, Jay, Jordan, Liam and Cowan were in Waterloo last weekend on a roadtrip so I had a free ride back, otherwise I might’ve just stayed in Waterloo. It was an interesting ride back since soon after we got onto the 401 Ryan’s car’s stereo died because the batteries were low. We then realized that the alternator wasn’t working and it wasn’t charging the battery nor was it powering the car.

By the time we got to about Milton we were at a service station and the car wouldn’t start up. Cowan was driving his truck so he came and gave us a boost and we were back on the 401. No more than 10km later, Ryan’s car didn’t even have enough juice to change gears and it completely died on the 401 and we coasted to a stop, luckily right by an on-ramp so there was lots of open road to stop and get another boost. We managed to get off at the next off-ramp and the car died again in a parking lot where we finally called CAA and got a tow all the way back to Belleville. Good times.

How much does a tow like that cost?

It was free because CAA covered it. Well, they supposedly cover like the first 200 km and you pay the rest or something but the tow truck driver billed for under 200 km even though it was just over I think.

CAA is a sweet deal for sure (100 and something a year)…great service. We called and the tow truck was there in about 15 mins.
