P.I. Is my neglected child…

April 25th, 2006 by tony

I’m serious…
Anyways, I’ve been busy with school recently, which has been a terrible onslaught of stress and destruction. But Hey! exams are almost done which is great. This means that I’ll probably be able to make more time for P.I.!1YAY!

- I was supposed to have an exam in my Roman Empire class today, because it conflicted with another exam I had yesterday morning. So I spent all that time studying yesterday and this morning. I arrived at my prof’s office ready for the fight, and thats when I saw the note on her door, saying that she is sick, and cannot give the exam today, it also told us to email her later.
I actually didn’t know what to do, I walked around not knowing what just happened, and when I was on my way home when I had to turn around and double check if I read the thing properly…for some reason I just didn’t konw what to do, or how to feel, it was crazy. I came prepared for the exam, and then nothing happened, I just stood there for a bit. This all may seem senseless to many of you, but I kinda felt cheated…like I ACTUALLY spent time preparing and studying for an exam that never took place, and might not even happen!I know its not the teachers fault, its just that I can’t believe I got out of bed early for this…

- I was reading the news today about the four fallen Canadian Soldiers, who died in Afghanistan a few days ago, and found out that the Conservative Government has decided to not allow the media to cover the return of the sodliers bodies to CFB Trenton. Even though before under the Liberal government, they allowed the media to have access to the return of the other soldier’s who have died. Now with the flag issue, I can understand, but with this? What is there to hide?

The government have barred media access to the return of the bodies, because they believe that it is a “”private and solemn” event to be shared only by the military and relatives of the soldiers.” Now I respect the families need for privacy, but these soldiers were there fighting for us, for Canada. Why is the country not allowed to see the bodies come back and to mourn the loss? It seems as if the government wants to lessen the impact of the deaths, so that if people don’t see it, they won’t care. Its the old “out of sight, out of mind” deal, and their sacrifice will go from being a national tragedy, to just being another number.

Adopting the American form of bringing bodies back, (sometimes they fly the bodies home in cargo planes), devalue the sacrifice that the soldier has made for their country, they turn out to be nothing more then a tool that can be easily replaced.

Thankfully in Canada, the national media actually cares about reporting and showing Canadians the faces and names of the soldiers who have died. It allows us to have more of a connection with what is happening, and to sympathise with the families that have lost a loved one.

Basically, if we take the whole visual element out of the war, it would then lessen the emotional impact, and when that happens, nobody will care, or even bother to take notice. It would probably take a lot more then a ban on the media to show the return of the bodies for people to stop noticing the war, but it is a step in that direction, and if more action is done by the government to try and sheild the human cost of the war from Canadians, then it is obvious that the government is trying to separate Canadians from what is happening. By separating us from the war, the government can do things with the military without the people noticing that much, and when soldiers die because of it, then no one will know, or even care. When people stop caring, they stop bothering the government about the war, the conservative government has already gotten some flak over Canada’s involvement in Afghanistan, so this could be a step to try and curb it. Though they are getting some trouble for it now, this will probably end up benefitting them in the long run, we’ll just have to wait and see.

-I’ll get a picture up on my page soon, I just don’t have one for it yet!

A Day at the Races….

April 16th, 2006 by mike

Yesterday I was exposed to yet another great Aussie tradition. Easter Races at Randwick Racetrack. Or more appropriately, going to the races, losing lots of money and drinking. I accomplished all 3. I even consulted with an old man who looked like a professional horse better and he still led me astray. By the end of the day I was reduced to screaming at a certain horse and then pretending I had won, it was good times. The day degenerated into chaos from there as you can see by my previous posting. I had a bit of an emotional moment last night.

Anyway, I am off travelling the coast for a bit on Tuesday so you may not hear from me but let it be known that I am out to set the coast on fire. My mantra will be “no excuses, play like a champion.” Make it yours as well.

You;ll have to excuse me…..

Thank You Easter Break

April 12th, 2006 by mike

I love Easter Break. I have only been in school for 6 weeks, and now I get 16 days off. How great is that, honestly? I don’t know how I am ever gonna get used to school back home again, but I guess I will cross that bridge when I get there.

So the cruise last week, total debauchery. The boat we were on looked like it just dropped off some refugees before it picked us up. It was really dodgy actually, I really don’t think it was seaworthy at all. But then I found out they were serving hamburgers for free and all was good with the world. Sadly I was unable to go as Venus or Serena Williams as I could not find a skirt that would fit me. I went with the Payne Stewart look, high socks, plaid pants tucked into the socks, it was pretty sweet. I also had a set of kids golf clubs to top it all off. I learned a new rule for drinking which is definately being imported to Canada. Guy drops his beer on the ground, all of sudden everyone starts singing this song which I have no clue what the words are. But the key part is this: someone took of their shoe and everyone poured some of their drink into it and the guy had to chug it. It was hilarious. There was beer, wine, and vodka in that thing, not to mention someone’s foot! I can’t wait for someone to drop a beer when I get back, ahahahaha. As for me, well I was in the bag by 9:15 but I kept at it. Ended up in a Kebab shop after, which is sweet. Nothing like a kebab after a night of drinking. Best part of the night though, I ask the guy where the bathroom is and he directs me through the kitchen. My balance and coordination not being up to my usual standards I turned to ask him again where the bathroom was, and when I turned back to my horror I collided with a bowl of freshly cut mushrooms. The mushrooms hit the floor, I apologize profusely. The guy smiling says to me “No problem my friend, go to the washroom, it’s ok.” So I keep walking, turn around and see the guy sweeping the mushrooms back into the bowl. Good thing I already had my kebab!

I went to an Aussie Rules Football game on Sunday which was pretty cool. Crazy sport though, but good times.

Speaking of football, I should be finding out if I made the touch footy team soon. Word on the street is that I should make it, but if not I will try my luck at Rugby 7s. That would be cool cause there is hitting involved. I find that after playing so much touch you really want to flatten people sometimes. We just played our 4th game tonight. We got flattened 6-2. I continued to pad my stats though, put up another 2 tries but it is really getting annoying now. I hate losing. It really sucks. We aren’t in last place though, I think tied for 3rd last. If you come in last you get this thing called the wooden spoon which means you suck basically. That is not how Captain Iron Mike wants to end his first season as skipper. I am missing the next two games though, so unless someone else steps up to the plate it won’t be good. The Americanos don’t even show up anymore, even if they do they will ride pine.

I hope everyone has a nice easter, I will be on a beach somewhere warm, or snorkeling or something. I will be sure to send pics though!

Some pics from the cruise are below, I am sure all those people I have pics of are great people. Too bad I only know 3 of the guys.

For the Record

April 6th, 2006 by nana

What’s been happening in the past few weeks:

I’m swamped in work, bought new boots, returned said boots for larger size, received some cds in the mail, caught up on Naruto, went crazy insane on St. Patrick’s day, went to a murder mystery party, and my computer died a few days ago. Today was the last day of classes for me, and I’m probably going out tonight or tomorrow.

Cheers.

HONour Roll

April 5th, 2006 by mike

Another week down, can’t believe how time flies down here. I know it is only Wednesday, but Wednesday is my Friday down here, muahahaha.

So I spent this weekend at Rohan’s (Laura’s bf) uncle’s cottage in Mayana which is 3 hours down the coast from Sydney. For the first time, I was cold in Australia and I had to put a sweater on. Shocking, but it happened. It was nice to get in a nice relaxing weekend for once, did a lot of surfing, lying on the beach, and just napping. Except for Saturday night where it ended up being Rohan’s uncle and I pounding tequila shots, that was good times. All in all it was a quality weekend, a nice calm one to get me prepared for the storm that has been brewing and will touch down tomorrow.

Just got in from touch footy tonight and we are finally on the board. Not a victory, but a well deserved 2-2 draw. The Americanos didn’t show up so that is why we are doing better, I am gonna start recruiting more players next week, but let’s be honest who would not want to play for Captain Iron Mike?? Too bad TSN was not around tonight though, I scored what may turn out to be the try of the season. Just turned 3 of their players inside out and made them look absolutely silly out there. Not sure if they appreciated me brushing the dirt off my shoulder a la Jay-Z afterwards but I know for a fact Gino Reda would have, and so would Jennifer Hedger. This was highlight of the night material and my brief moment of glory so far this week.

The week is only gonna get better though (or worse??) because tomorrow night is everybody’s favourite night, Booze Cruise Night. Gonna go to the local Vinnie’s which is like a Salvation Army store and get me some nice old school golf attire and then get the festivities started at 3. It is gonna be a long night, and I already see how it is going to turn out. Our boat docks right outside the casino which is open 24 hrs so I will most likely end up there. I might as well go gamble while I am on a winning streak though. I took down $220 last Friday in a poker tourney at some guy’s house who I didn’t even know. That is the best feeling ever, walk into someone’s house, meet them for the first time and then take all their money. It felt damn good.

Friday and Saturday night are going to be large as well, and then I have an assignment due Monday and an exam Tuesday so that should be interesting. Easter Break is only one sweet sweet week away though, so if I don’t end up overboard tomorrow night it should be good times.

On a totally random note, I have noticed that mullets are huge down here. I see tons of mullets on a daily basis. Are they getting back in style back home as well or is it just an Aussie thing?? I am not talking dirty Tennessee Waterfalls or Kentucky Mudslides, I am talking about perfectly coiffed mullets. Like you see one, you look and say “damn that is a sweet, sweet mullet.” You can’t help it. Mark my words mullets are coming back with vengeance. I kind of want one. Maybe I will get one!

Nothing says quality like $10 shades
